The Temptation of a Kiss ~ Chapter 6

Chapter 6

Landon drew back the curtains and opened both windows. The night air was cool and blew in as a slight soft breeze. A new candle had been lit next to Brook’s side of the bed on the table. It offered light if she was to be sick again.

He removed his coat and tie hanging it over the chair to the dressing table. He then sat and took off his boots. Sitting at the other side of the room he stared at Brook. She looked beautiful in the candle light. The maids had taken her hair out of her pins. She was far more beautiful with her hair cascading down around her than he had thought she would be.

Landon chuckled quietly to himself. The thought of pampering a woman and not receiving anything for it amused him. He had never done it before. Who is really the fool? You are going to lay in a bed all night long with a gorgeous woman and only take care of her while she is ill.

After a moment he took a rag with cool water and lay next to her on the bed. Landon lifted the covers and then let them fall back against her body. He let out a loud chuckle.

“Why on earth is she not dressed in anything other than her undergarments?” Landon raised his eyes to the ceiling. “Is this a test?” He asked out loud.

He let out a sigh. Pulling back the covers he managed to get her arms out and place them a top of the thick quilt. Gently Landon laid the cool cloth to her forehead. She was cool and clammy. Removing the cloth for a second he blew softly at her moist skin across her damp forehead.

She still had no coloring in her face and lips. Landon whispered, “Brook.” She did not answer him. He dipped the cloth and then placed it on her throat wiping away the sweat on her neck. “Hey Red,” he whispered into her ear.

Brook stirred slightly making an m sound.

“Red do you want some water?”

She mouthed no. Landon blew on her neck and then her face. Brook turned her head slightly in his direction.

“I know this feels good Red.” He blew on her neck again. Landon reached over and pulled up her hair off her shoulder. He blew softer this time as he leaned in closer. “Do you like it here Red?”

Brook licked her dry lips slowly. Landon placed the cloth to her neck and creased her skin to her shoulder. He trailed behind it with his breath.

She could feel how close he was to her skin. The room was still pinning and she wished it wasn’t because she wanted nothing more than to turn to him and kiss him again. His breath was cool but the heat of his mouth close to her felt hot.

Brook felt her own breath begin to deepen and she had no control over it. The tingling she was beginning to feel was moving all over her body.

“Do you want me to stop Red?” Landon’s voice was so soft slow and deep. It caused her to shiver next to him. Her breathes coming into her lungs were slow but they left her with gust.

Landon ran the cloth across her collar bones to the other side of her neck. Leaning further up on his elbow, he bent over across her and blew on Brook’s neck.

He felt Brook’s fingers rest on top of his finger tips on the bed and squeeze him gently. He paused and then whispered, “Do you want me to stop?”

Her throat was so dry but she managed to moan no. She heard him chuckle quietly above her. If she could talk she would have said more please everywhere more.

Landon watched her ever so slight facial expressions to his movements across her skin. He placed the cloth under her chin and moved down to the base of her neck.

“Shall I do it again here?” He repeated it moving a little lower this time to where the top of her chest started.

Brook let out a soft moan. Landon moved over the same spot again and blew on her softly. She tilted her head back a bit as she sighed from the sensation of it. Moving the cloth across her collar bone he pushed the strap of her gown down off her shoulder.

She squeezed his fingers and moved her head to the side inviting him to do whatever it was he wanted to do. Landon took her hand in his and kissed her neck. He pulled back and blew over the area where his lips just were. He repeated it under her chin, on her shoulder, and then again on her neck.

“Red can you open your eyes for me?”

Brook slightly shook her head no. She had the worst feeling if she had the room would spin so fast that she would again be sick.

The cool damp cloth touched her lips. It felt so good.

“I want you to drink some water Red and then you need to get some sleep,” he whispered to her.

Brook wanted nothing but him and his kisses. To hell with water and sleep. She tried to moan no but before she knew it he had her head lifted with a glass to her mouth. Brook coughed up the small sip she took. Her throat was too dry. He insisted she try again. It felt cool all the way down to her empty belly.

“Not too much. You’ll get sick again Red,” Landon said.

He grabbed the end of the thick quilt at her feet and pulled it up and threw it off the side of the bed. Touching her leg with the back of his hand she felt hot. He then lay down beside her with the cloth. He stoked over her skin until she eventually feel asleep.

Brook awoke the next morning curled up in Landon’s arms with her legs tangled in his. She remained still for nearly an hour listening to his heart beat. She did not want to move for several reasons. One she felt foolish for getting sick. Two because she did not want to wake him. And three, because she wanted to be in his arms. Brook knew this would never happen again.

She squeezed her eyes shut at that thought. How had this happened? When did this happen? What was that last night? I kissed him in a room full of people. How am I going to be able to face them or him this morning?

Landon opened one eye to see a room drenched in the morning sun. He quickly shut it. His hand brushed over the space on the bed next to him. The disappointment of empty space next to him made him think for a second.

You are seriously hoping to wake up to her in your arms. This is going too far now. Thinking about her when she is with me is one thing, but now, thinking about her when she is not with me. No this has to stop. Get up. Get dressed and find breakfast and if you happen to see her, pretend as if it was no big deal. She is just another woman. Nothing special.

The image of Brook’s long curly red hair in his hand flashed in his mind. He remembered how he caressed it between his fingers last night after he took in the scent of it. Dam it! Get up!

Landon followed the scent of bacon and ham to the breakfast room. All was in attendance but Brook.

“Oh my boy how is Brook this morning?” Grams shouted from the other end of the table.

“I assume she is well.” Landon took a plate and turned to the table of food. His stomach was hungry and could wait no longer.

“Landon my boy we all know you looked after her last night,” Gram said. “How could you not know of her condition this morning?”

He didn’t turn around. “She was already gone when I awoke this morning. I assume she is well because she was gone.”

Sarah looked to Grams and then to Devon. “Where did she go?”

Richards cleared his throat. “Lady Brook left early this morning.” He leaned closer to Landon at the table of food and said, “Wearing as little as a quilt I might add.”

   Landon’s gaze flew to Richards.

“What was that Richards darling?” Grams asked.

“I said, she was swearing she felt fit and I was glad,” Richards said.

Devon tilted his head slightly and gave Richards an odd look. It caught Richards’s attention and he glanced at him. He gave Devon the eyebrow and walked away. Devon pinched his lips together with understanding.

“Well perhaps you two ladies can look in on her after breakfast,” Devon said with a smile.

“I think I shall like to go now. Lord Price may I use your carriage?” Sarah asked.

Everyone at the table stopped and stared at her.

Richards stepped forward and said, “I will send for one right away Lady Sarah.”

Devon smiled at her. Rising from the table he offered her his hand to escort her outside.

Grams waited for the room to clear. “I want to ask you something my dear Landon. What are your intentions with Brook?”

Landon choked on his bacon. Grams stood up and went over to pat him on the back.

“I fear it is more my question than the bacon my boy. Take a drink of your coffee then you can answer my question.”

After managing to get the bacon down he turned to Grams who was now seated back in her place. “Your question is silly. The intention as you call it is…friendship. I aided a friend last night. No clothes were removed and I promise you she is still an innocent.”

“Well that is another subject entirely my boy but I do not want you adding her to your list of women to visit in the middle of the night,” Grams said.

   Landon laughed loudly at her.

Grams slammed her hand to the table and shouted, “I am an old woman Landon and you can not fool a fool boy.”

“You are neither old nor a fool Grams. Early spring flowers appear dull in your presence my lovely.”

Grams rolled her eyes. “Oh honestly Landon. You are too much for your own good. A menace to the society of young ladies and widowers.”

“Careful not to neglect the perfectly aged as well,” Landon said and then smiled devilishly at her. “I give my word we are merely close friends and nothing more.”

Grams let out a grunt. “I do not believe that for a second. She has had enough heart aches in her life Landon and I fear you will only add to that.”

Landon looked at her and paused for a moment. “Is this your true opinion of me? That I am some rake running around taking what I want.”

Grams gazed at him for a long while then broke the silence. “I see a mutual interest with you two. And sometimes that can cloud one’s judgment. She is beautiful Landon. And you…you are far too charming. I care about both of you too much to not be able to have you visit together if something were to happen.”

Landon glanced down at his coffee. “I understand Grams. Would it bring you comfort to know I care too much for you to allow that to happen?”

Grams smiled and said, “Immensely but I still do not trust that.” She stood up. “Well I’m off, the carriage is waiting.”

Landon stood and grabbed her hand and kissed it. “Give her my best will you?”

Grams squeezed his hand and said, “My fear is she has already had your best.”

Landon chuckled. “If that were true I assure you she would not have left this morning my lovely.”

Grams giggled. “You are truly wicked my boy.”

Landon realized he left his tie upstairs. The room was straightened up already with fresh linens on the bed. He walked over to the dressing table and found his tie in a porcelain dish. Lying next to his tie was Brook’s handkerchief. Landon picked them both up and placed them in his pocket.

He turned back and gazed at the bed. His mind drifted back to the night before and he could see her there lying in the candle light.

The Temptation of a Kiss ~ Chapter 2

Chapter 2

6 weeks earlier

Brook sat quiet and wide eyed as she listened to Grams tell Lady Croft to mind her own business. The sudden question coming from Lady Croft to Sarah concerning Devon and Sarah’s scandal had sent Grams into the most vicious sharp-tongued frenzy.

“I shall quickly remind you of your own daughter’s scandalous marriage to the father of her child, which is in question though out town.”

Lady Croft placed her hand at her chest and said, “I assure you and the rest of the ton, the marriage is honorable and sound, as is their child.”

Grams remained seated and said, “Yes well, I highly doubt that. Any young woman would most certainly not jump between the sheets with that bumbling idiot, unless she was already with child.”

Lady Croft gasped at Grams frankness.

“Oh shut your mouth Able. You and I are no fools and for that reason alone, I dare say it is best to keep to your own business. Roomers coming from the right source can be very damaging to one’s reputation,” Grams said.

Lady Croft then walked away without another word to Sarah or Grams.

Grams took Sarah’s hand in her own and whispered to both her and Brook, “Direct and to the point is the best way to handle these upright gossipy woman.”

Brook smiled at how bold Grams remained even in public. She was use to it at the Price Estate. Grams never shied away from voicing neither her thoughts nor opinions. Brook secretly questioned whether they were related somehow.

Sarah turned to Grams and said, “I have given thought to remaining with Lady Wilcox until my marriage. It is creating a scandal with Devon and me dwelling under the same roof.”

Grams said, “Do you honestly give weight to the tons judgment of you Sarah?”

Sarah smiled. “No I do not. My fear is for the family.”

“Well fear not my child. I can assure you, Devon nor do I care one bit what is said. Let them talk,” Grams said.

Brook giggled. “Touché Grams!” Brook agreed with her.

“Touché? I am frightened to ask to what.”

The Ladies all looked up to see a tall young man with brown hair and large brown eyes standing before them.

Grams burst out, “Oh my dear Quentin! I dare ask how you have been my boy.”

Quentin smiled and said, “Quit well thank you. When I saw you I had hoped to see Devon close by.”

“He will be along shortly. It has had to have been five years since I last set eyes upon you,” Grams said.

“That sounds about right. The military keeps me moving often. I hold many regrets for not keeping in contact with you.”

“Yes, well, all is forgiven, now sit down. I would like to introduce Brook O’Brien and Sarah McMay, Devon’s wife to be,” Grams said. “Ladies this is Quentin Alexander an old dear friend of Devon and Landon’s.”

Quentin took each of their hands and kissed them after bowing of course. He then took a seat next to Brook on Grams left. The group remained silent for a short while. Brook noticed Sarah was fidgeting. Brook slowly covered her hand over both of Sarah’s in her lap. Brook continued looking forward and smiled softly. She knew Sarah had looked to her.

“I must confess that I was under the impression Lady Brook was to marry Devon.” Quentin moved his gaze to Brook. “Landon had spoken so often of you I assumed it was to be you,” Quentin said.

Brook did not look at him at first. “I suppose one will always draw an incorrect notion when one assumes. Next time it may serve you better to ask of things you do not know.”

Quentin chuckled. “My intension was not to offend you Lady Brook. I happen to be merely stating-

Brook’s gaze flew to him. “Offend? I dare say Sir, you are full of assumptions.” She could feel Sarah squeezing her fingers tightly. “I suppose you are now going to assume Landon and I hold interest in one another?”

   Quentin began to say, “Well-

“Well let me assure you, we do not. And further more we are friends is all,” Brook said.

Quentin cleared his throat. “Would you care to dance Lady Brook?” He stood up in front of her.

“Yes, yes I would,” Brook said quickly. She suddenly grew uncomfortable at the mention of Landon. Quentin’s offer was the perfect excuse to remove herself from the group. Feeling her cheeks grow warm she had to do something.

Quentin held out his hand for Brook and gave Sarah a quick wink. Sarah drew her eyebrows together in confusion with his intentions.

As they approached the dance area Brook said, “I apologize for my quick words with you Sir Quentin. We had been discussing the affects of one who gossips about others.”

“Quite understandable Lady Brook. Your advice was well taken and I do promise to be more careful in the future,” Quentin said.

   Brook smiled and laughed slightly.

   “He was right,” Quentin said.

   “Who was right?” Brook asked.

“Landon. He told me your smile could change the mood of a room. And that your laugh was contagious,” Quentin said.

Brook’s expression held but her mind was racing. I wonder what else Landon had to say about me and why, why was he speaking about me?

“Are there any warnings before we begin?” Quentin asked.

Brook smiled and said, “I favor most men’s left feet, but if you prefer for me to step on your right, I will make an effort towards it.”

Quentin chuckled. “No, the left is fine with me Lady Brook. Am I allowed to lead or will it be a case of you decide as we dance?”

At that moment, the music began. Brook smiled devilishly at him and said, “I think I shall surprise you Sir Quentin.” She placed her hand in his. “Did Landon tell you I dance like a mule on ice?”

Quentin reframed from smiling at her chose of words. “He actually said you were flawless. That is why I was teasing you.”

“I suppose he did not happen to mention I have only danced with him. I do not attend balls on a regular basis. Grams had us practice to refresh my memory, but other than that, nothing,” Brook said.

Quentin began to move with Brook. “Well you seem to be doing outstanding thus far.”

Brook was looking down at her feet. As she did, she stepped on Quentin’s right foot and then bumped her head into his when she looked down again.

   “I am sorry,” Brook said.

“We agreed it would be my left foot, remember?” Quentin said. “Relax and allow me to guide you. It will not help if you keep staring at your own feet.”

Brook gazed up to Quentin and said, “I have forgotten all the steps. Perhaps it is better if you just escort me back to Grams and Sarah.”

“Nonsense you can do this,” Quentin said as he smiled at her.

Landon and Devon approached Sarah and Grams. Devon took a seat next to Sarah. He gave her a long kiss on the cheek and then whispered something in her ear, which caused her to blush.

   “Where is Brook?” Landon asked.

“Dancing my dear boy with your friend Quentin,” Grams said and then giggled.

Landon looked towards the dance area to see Quentin trying to dance with Brook. “What are they doing?”

“I am not certain. Perhaps they are both attempting to lead,” Grams said.

The group and everyone else in the ton watched as Brook repeatedly stepped on Quentin’s feet and a few other peoples’ in close proximity.

Brook crashed into Lady Marcy Croft when Quentin said go to the right and Brook moved left. Lady Croft glared at her fiercely with disgust. Brook immediately offered an apology. Lady Croft did not respond. She just scowled at Brook.

Brook released her hand from Quentin’s and started to move towards Lady Croft.

Landon stepped in front of Brook’s path right as she was going to come face to face with Lady Croft. “Good evening Red.” Landon scooped up Brook’s hand and placed his other hand about her waist. “OK, here we go and one, two, three.” Landon gave Quentin the ok to leave.

Quentin smiled and left to join the others.

Brook and Landon finished the dance flawlessly. Neither of them spoke as they gazed into one another’s eyes. After the music had ceased, Brook went to leave the dance area.

Landon took a hold of her hand and pulled her back to him. “I believe I was cheated out of a dance, Red.”

Brook said nothing as the music began again. He drew her close to his body. She could not turn away from his gaze on her.

Landon gave Brook’s hand a small squeeze and he watched Brook’s lips part slightly. The rush of the memory of their kiss a month ago flooded his mind. He still remembered how soft her lips were. The taste of her mouth on his. Somehow, every time he thought of the kiss, it felt as though it had just happened. You are trouble wrapped up in a voluptuous fiery red package. I find myself wanting to get into trouble right now. Why do your eyes always say yes to me? It would be far more helpful if they offered some kind of resistance instead of agreeing with my every devilish thought. Landon did not move his gaze but he did clear his thought the best he could.

Quentin took a seat next to Grams on the chaise lounge. Grams patted his leg and said, “Do tell us where you have been hiding.”

“I have just returned from China. At present time, I am on leave for three months. I suppose you have all heard of my sister’s passing?” Quentin said.

Devon said, “We did and are truly sorry. Theresa will be missed. How is your mother holding up?”

“She is not dealing with it well. I was told the first two weeks she did not leave Theresa’s bedchamber,” Quentin said.

   “Oh dear,” Sarah said.

Quentin looked to Grams and said, “I was also told you and Lady Wilcox were the ones to get her to immerge from it.” He took up Grams hand and kissed it. “I do not know how I will be able to repay you for your kind friendship to my mother.”

“My dear boy I care very deeply for your mother. She did the very same for me when I lost Roy, Devon’s father. As her and I had done the same when Clare, when Sarah’s mother passed,” Grams said.

   “You had?” Sarah asked.

“Yes we did Sarah. I know Lady Wilcox is your Mother’s aunt, but she had raised her as a daughter,” Grams said.

“I never knew that,” Sarah said.

“Yes well enough sad stories. I shall like to invite everyone to my country estate next week,” Quentin said.

“My boy, we could all use a change of scenery. Who else is to attend?

The music ended and Landon held Brook in his embrace a several counts longer than needed. Brook let him and did not pull away. He finally slowly released her hand from his and felt Brook’s hand begin to slide out of his hand. Instinctively he squeezed her hand at the last second before it slipped away completely. Landon gently rubbed Brook’s finger tips with his. The dance area was now empty and all eyes were upon them. Lord knows how long they had been standing there like that. For them, time did not exist. A sudden high pitched shriek came from one of the violins. Landon blinked out of his trance as did Brook.

Brook felt a rush of air leave her lungs as Landon released her fingers. She didn’t want him to let go. The comfort of his embrace felt warm and right to her. She smiled up to him trying to hide her own thoughts from him as if he could read her mind. Which at times she believed he could. He always seemed to know what she was going to do or say before she did.

Landon smiled then bowed. “Shall we, Red?” He held out his arm in the direction of the group.

“I am not certain when you began to call me Red, but I do not care for it.”

As she walked past him, Landon said to her back, “But I do.” He could hear Brook’s soft giggle. Her tone was deep and seductive sounding. Flirtatious even.

“Hello Landon,” Marcy Croft said as she stepped in front of their path. She looked at Brook and said, “I was relieved to see you figured out which of your feet are left and right.”

Brook glared at Marcy with pure hate. “Yes, well your bottom seemed to occupy most of the space around me. It was hard to view my feet.”

Marcy threw her head back and gave Brook a mocking laugh.

“Please excuse us Lady Croft we have friends waiting for us,” Landon said.

“Oh, I see. Now it is Lady Croft?” Marcy said.

Landon took Brook by the arm and led her away from Marcy.

“What did she mean by that?” Brook asked.

“She is always jealous of new woman to the ton and does her best to intimidate them. Pay her no attention no matter what she says to you,” Landon said. Beats of sweat were forming on his forehead.

As they arrived at the group, Landon offered to get everyone a drink. Quentin stood and said he would assist him.

As they walked far enough away from the group Quentin said, “Brook is more amazing than you had led on. Irish tongue does not do her justice from the way you had described it.”

Landon laughed. “Yes well Brook is hard to describe with mere words.”

“If you were hoping we might hit it off, I have to be honest and tell you, she is too much to handle. As entertaining as she is, I would be tongue tied with her every statement. She is more your type than mine Landon.”

Landon stopped and said, “I do not believe she is. Brook is a friend Quentin.”

Quentin smiled and said, “I was only pointing out that-

“Well don’t because you are wrong,” Landon snapped at him. “I am going to get the punch now.”

“I will get the drinks from…the bar.” Before he had a chance to finish his sentence Landon had walked away.

While Landon poured the punch into the three cups, he felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned slightly to see who it was. Good God I wish you would find yourself kidnapped woman.

“So, do tell me Landon, are you in the habit of slumming now?” Marcy asked.

“Marcy why do you always have to be so unpleasant? It is as if you aim to be malicious every morning when your feet hit the floor.”

Marcy turned her head away from Landon and gazed out over the crowd. “Perhaps I am plain-spoken and blunt with my words.” She crossed her arms over her stomach. “It is what makes me who I am.”

“Cruel, unkind, and wretched is what makes you, you,” Landon said. He started to walk away from her.

Marcy hollered out a little too loud, “I propose your new friend does not know all about you Lord…Charming.”

Landon turned back and faced her. “I am sorry you are hurt but that gives you no right to hurt others around you. Stay away from her Marcy.”

“Why, because you don’t want her to know the truth about us?”

“And what truth might that be Marcy? The truth that being this close to you draws up feeling of repugnance or nausea?” Landon said in a hard whisper.

Marcy glared at him and narrowed her eyes. “The truth about the broken engagement and our baby Landon.”

Monday's Escape Into Romance Is..."Surrendering"

Surrendering

Chapter 26

“I want to dance every dance with you.” His body was inches away from her. Landon lingered for much longer than he should have waiting for Brook's response.

She smiled sweetly at him. “Do you not like your feet?”

Landon chuckled. “Brook, you may step on them all night long. They are at your disposal.”

Everyone took their seats in the carriage and they were off to the ball. When they arrived, Sarah was thrilled to see the ballroom was not nearly as crowded as she thought it was going to be. She did not care for crowded places and had hoped the ballroom would not be this evening. Sarah squeezed Brook’s hand tight as Brook returned it with her own. They were so very excited. Brook had never seen such a large room before. Sarah pointed out the sweet table and commented on how pretty it looked. Too pretty to eat Brook had told her back.

Landon led the three women to a spot in the corner with four chairs next to the sweet table. He turned to Grams and said, “We cannot have you go the evening without your sweets, my mini muffin.”

Grams let out a loud giggle, which had drawn some attention, and said, “There is nothing mini about me my love. God bless you for the sweets though.”

Landon laughed and said, “To me, you could not be any more perfect.” He then bowed and kissed her gloved hand.

He then turned to Brook and said, “My I have the first dance?”

“Yes. Thank you Landon.” Brook felt her cheeks grow warm. She was so relieved he had asked her. Everyone will be watching for the first dance and she is out of practice.

Sarah sat next to Grams facing the ballroom. Over the next twenty minutes Grams, Brook, and Sarah watched the crowds as they moved about the room. The band then cued for the next dance to start in ten minutes. Grams informed the girls, they strung their instruments, when the music is about to start.

Brook was studying her dance card when she was aware of a male figure in front of her. Brook gazed up to see Landon standing before her. He held out his hand to her without uttering a word to her. Everything her would have said to her was in his eyes. Brook rose to her feet without breaking their heated stare.

Landon led her to the edge of the dance floor. He could feel her hand was trembling on his arm. “You dance very well Brook. There is no need for you to be nervous.” He smiled at her warmly. “Let me lead this time though.”

Brook laughed. “I will try, although I have to admit, I like to be in control.”

Landon raised his eyebrow. “Sometimes that is not a bad thing, except on the dance floor.” Landon gave her his wicked smile that always worked to bring a blush out on the ladies.

Brook gave him a sideways glance, then said, “I could see how you would think your devilish charm works on some woman. I presume they are young women?” She then turned and looked straight ahead with a grin across her face. “Perhaps I may be the wrong choice for you. I see a group of younger ladies in the corner over there.”

Landon said nothing in return. He stood there feeling the need to shut her up with lips. She was sassy and he liked that about her. Women do not tend to challenge him this way. The music started and Landon grabbed hold of her and swirled Brook onto the dance floor with strength and demanding need for her to submit to his lead. He intended to remind her who was in control right now.

Brook followed his lead, and it looked to everyone else that, Brook and Landon had danced together often. They moved blending with one another without flaw. Landon’s moves were sharp and sudden, full of turns as he held her tight. Brook did not fumble or miss step, she moved on his cue. He held her closer than he knew he was supposed to and he didn’t care.

Her skin felt hot under his touch. Landon was handsome and Brook could only dream of dancing with a man who looked the way he does. This truly was a magical night for Brook.

In the corner, a man approached Grams and Sarah. “Lady Wilsbee, how are you this evening?” The man then bowed perfectly. “I observed you as I entered the room and desired to pay you a visit.”

“I am quite well Duke Wellington. I am honored you thought to greet me. May I introduce you to Lady Mcmay?”

The Duke bowed to Sarah. She stood and curtsied in return. Sarah noticed he had quickly glanced at her chest. He smiled at her as if he was not sorry nor regretful for it.

“May I beg a seat beside you Lady Mcmay?”

“Yes Of course, please do sit down,” Sarah said. She did not intend to make a scene out of respect for Grams. Sarah did not want this man looking down her dress so she turned slightly towards Grams. With her back at an angle to him, she felt more comfortable, besides she wanted to keep an eye out for Devon.

The three of them talked until they were approached by Landon and Brook. The Duke stood up and offered Brook his seat next to Sarah. Grams introduced Brook, as he then bowed and kissed her hand. The Duke turned to Landon and said his greetings to him. They had known one another for a while and began talking of politics and what not.

Sarah leaned into Brook telling her of her displeasure of the Duke. Brook eyed him up and down. Both the women were use to having to deal with men treating them as an object.

After thirty minutes or so, the Duke turned to Sarah and said, “I shall like to ask you for the next dance Lady Mcmay?”

Sarah suddenly felt flushed. “Thank you Duke Wellington, but I.”

Grams butted in, “She would be delighted to Duke. Sarah had not danced yet you see and I would very much enjoy seeing you two spin about the floor.” Grams then turned to Sarah and said, “Do not worry yourself about leaving me, my dear. Go and have some fun.”

Sarah smiled up at the Duke and said, “I would be honored then Duke,” seeing that she really had no choice.

“Very well then, I shall return shortly with some refreshments for everyone and we shall dance.” The Duke then left.

Sarah watched him until he was out of earshot. She turned to Grams to see her grinning. “I did not care to dance with him Grams.” She whispered.

“And why not?” Grams turned her head back and forth scanning the ballroom. “I do not see Devon here with us, do you? The Duke is a charming enough fellow and it wouldn’t kill you to broaden your horizons, shall we say.”

Sarah could not believe Grams had just said that to her. “It was still my choice.” Sarah said softly.

“My dear, go and enjoy yourself tonight and tomorrow will always be another day. There is no harm in dancing my dear child. Life is for living, not for sitting in corners with old women, you are far too young for that.”

Landon cleared his throat as the Duke was coming up to their group.

The Duke approached and he brought another man with him. He introduced him to everyone. Landon had heard of this Deerfield Earl fellow and he was a rude man with a lack of respect for women. The man has a reputation for chasing all kinds of women and leaving them when they discover they are with his child. He was glad Devon was not here, he would never tolerate this man in his presence and a scene would surely erupt because of it.

The music started and Sarah rose to her feet. The Earl turned to Brook and asked her for a dance.

Landon stepped in front of the man and said, “Her dance card is full. “ He took Brook’s hand and led her to the dance floor again.

“Why did you do that Landon?” Brook was confused.

“Do you not remember what I had said to you earlier? I told you I wanted to dance every dance with you.”

“I thought you were asking Landon, as you should be.” Brook narrowed her eyes at him.

“Well I’m not. I'm telling you. Besides he is not the kind of man you should be dancing with tonight or any other night.” He led Brook into the waltz.”

Landon took Brook in his arms and she could feel heat coming off him. He gazed deep into her eyes and made her flush. Brook felt herself soften in his arms. She wanted to memorize everything about this night. The music, the delicious foods and sweets, the atmosphere of it all, but mostly dancing with him. She felt as if he were trying to make this night perfect for her. He was covering her with all of his attention. Dance after dance and then bring her sweets. She felt spoiled by his adoring consideration towards her.

Sarah was swirling around the dance floor with the Duke. She was not enjoying herself with his hands on her. They made small conversation at first. He was staring at her neck and then down to her chest. He was obviously attracted to her, which made Sarah feel more uncomfortable. He did not try to hide his expressions of desire for her, let alone where his gazes were falling on her body. She wished she had not said what she did to Devon. He should be the one holding her right now.

As they turned, Sarah caught a glimpse of Devon standing next to Grams starring at her in the arms of the Duke. This caused Sarah to fumble and step on the Duke’s foot. She wanted to immediately run to him. To be able to stand next to him and feel safe within his presence from the predator that held her now.

   “Oh my apologies Duke Wellington.”

“No need to apologize Lady Sarah, I have another one I can use,” referring to his foot.

Sarah should have laughed at that, but Devon looked very angry. She was wondering if he intended to cause a scene. That would at least free her from this man’s prying eyes on her. She had secretly hoped Devon would do something.

The dance ended and the Duke escorted Sarah back to Grams and the others. Sarah looked at Devon and smiled at him. Devon glared at her with a miffed look. She felt her face deepen with color. The last thing she intended was to upset him further, especial after what she had said to him that morning. If she could just get him alone, she would explain that it was not her wish to dance with Duke Wellington. Sarah moved closer to Devon’s side waiting for the right time to speak to him.

“Lord Price, it is good to see you again.” The Duke said to him.

Devon was very polite and greeted him back. “How is your sister? Is she in attendance tonight?”

“She is very well, thank you. In fact, she was asking of you, I believe she is hoping for a dance with you. I do believe she had heard you would be attending the ball this evening and changed her mind about coming tonight.”

“I shall have to see if I might find her.” Devon turned and said, “Won’t you please excuse me for a moment.” He gave Sarah a quick glare and walked away with the Duke.

Sarah was on the verge of tears. She felt her chest begin to tighten. “Dev wait.” He ignored her.

“My dear he is with his drink right now. I have no clue where the boy has been but he smells of it.” Grams said to her.

Sarah turned to her and said, “Alright then, two can play this game.” Sarah walked over to the man with the tray of drinks and brought him back to the group. “You can set them down here, thank you.”

“The whole tray my Lady?” There had to of been ten to twelve drinks on the tray.

“Yes the whole tray!” Sarah spat out at him.

The man set the tray down and walked away.

She sat down and started to drink a glass of champagne. As quickly as she had picked it up, she had then made it disappear. Sarah put the empty glass down and took another one.

“Well you only have ten more to go Sarah.” Landon teased her. He went to go to take one and she slapped his hand away. Landon started laughing.

“If you are going to continue to poke fun at me, I wish you to leave. If your intention is to put on a smile and have a drink with me, then I invite your company.” Sarah said to him. She then threw him a glare. “I have every intention of taking Grams wise advise. The evening is young and so am I.”

Sarah then finished off the second glass and went to take the third. Landon gently placed his hand over hers and said, “You should pace yourself, otherwise your next dance partner may be wearing all the champagne you have just drank.” He then smiled at her.

Sarah picked up the glass anyway and drank it all. The bubbles were tickling her nose and she wiggled it and laughed. “I love champagne, don’t you Brook?”

“I do on occasion a glass or two.” Brook looked up to Landon. He shrugged his shoulders at her.

The music chimed to alert the crowd the next dance was about to begin. The Duke and Devon approached as Sarah had finished drinking her forth glass.

“I would like to introduce Lady Isabella Wellington, my sister.” The Duke said.

Sarah stood up a little too quickly as the champagne rushed to her head. She grabbed for Landon beside her to steady herself. Landon took her hand and looped it through his arm, without anyone noticing other than Devon and Brook.

Sarah starred at the woman. She was not at all impressed by her beauty. So what if she was tall with big stunning brown eyes and thick curly black hair. She wasn’t Devon’s type. At least Sarah did not think she was. Maybe it was Sarah who was not, Devon’s type. Sarah then began to wonder how Devon and this woman, who looked as if she had fallen off a cloud in heaven, knew each other. Had he made love to her and touched her the way he would not touch Sarah? Has this woman seen him naked? Did she touch Devon the way Sarah had? Sarah’s face was visible frowning at the woman. Was she going to try to steal the man she loved?

Devon noticed Sarah’s expression and he looked to Landon. He smiled at Devon and casually pointed to the four empty glasses on the table. Devon glanced back up to Landon and mouthed the word, “All?” Landon still grinning, shook his head yes slowly. Devon pinched his lips together and gazed at Sarah who was still glaring at Isabella across from her.

“Lady Mcmay, would you care to dance with me again?” The Duke asked her.

Sarah looked over to him and said, “I shall like that very much.”

Landon stepped in front of Sarah momentarily and whispered something to the Duke. He then stepped back and handed Sarah off to him.

The Duke smiled widely and said to Landon, “I can handle that.” He then turned his gaze to Sarah and said, “Are you ready Lady Sarah?” His eyes moved to her chest again and Devon caught it.

Sarah stepped forward. “I am more than ready, Duke” She gave him a seductive smile as she batted her long eyelashes at him.

What the hell was she doing? Devon felt his hand begin to twitch. He took Isabella and led the way to the dance area. He looked into her big brown eyes then gazed at Sarah. Devon felt nothing for the woman he was holding. Yes, they had a past but, she was not Sarah. The feelings one has during an affair are not love. An affair is just a moment of attraction between two people and nothing more. If it were more, then the two having it, would commit and remain faithful to one another. Devon was never able to see his children in this woman, as Eli had put it. Sarah...he did. The Duke was holding the woman he loved and Devon was pissed.

Sarah threw her head back at what the Duke had just said to her. This caused her body to fall forward as her chest smashed into his. She did not care any longer that he was starring down at her chest. She was trying very hard not to step on his feet and she was not succeeding at it.

Devon watched them intently while staying close to them.

“Why are you not dancing with her Devon?” Isabella asked him.

Devon quickly looked to her. He realized he was being rude. “I am sorry Isabella for neglecting you.”

“You are being rude but, you did not answer my question. I have never witnessed you acting this way for a woman before. The way you gaze at her is beautiful.”

Devon said, “It is complicated. We had an argument this morning and have to seen one another till now.”

Isabella smiled up at him. “Love is always what you make it to be Devon. You should go to her.”

As she said that, the music ended. Devon escorted Isabella back to the place they had all been sitting. Brook and Landon arrived and Brook took a seat next to Grams, who was now sitting with another older woman. Landon found a few more chairs for their growing group.

Grams made introductions between Brook, Isabella, Landon, and Lady Wilcox. The women began to carry on about the evening and the scandals Lady Wilcox had discovered. It was a few minutes before Devon had recognized Sarah and the Duke were not among the group.

“Where is Sarah?” he asked Landon harshly.

Landon glanced around at everyone who sat in front of them and then said, “I do not know.”

“I believe I saw her going up to the terrace with Duke Wellington.” Grams said and then smiled at Devon. “At least someone is showing interest in the poor girl. A woman does not spend hours preparing for a night out only to be ignored by the one she cares for.”

Devon did not finish listing to Grams as he left and headed for the stairs that led to the terrace. His heart was pounding in his ears. If he was kissing her, he would kill him. Devon reached the top step as he heard Sarah’s laugh. She sounded flirtatious and careless.

The terrace was empty except for the Duke and Sarah. Devon stood in the doorway behind them. He then slipped off to the side, in the shadows. He felt himself begin to feel lightheaded again. He shook it off and remained focused on them.

Sarah had her back to Devon and was leaning slightly forward on her forearms on top of the stone ledge of the railing. The Duke was more or less facing Devon as he starred at the side of Sarah’s face.

“Can I ask you something Lady Sarah?” The Duke said.

“Yes you may.” Sarah said to him. She was still gazing up to the starry sky above them.

“How is it you are not someone’s wife? A beautiful woman such as your self should have already been married.” His voice was smooth.

Devon was grinding his teeth together.

“I had thought I did not want to marry and then I had met someone but, he does not feel the same way for me.” Sarah said sounding a little sad.

“Well then he is a fool.” The Duke said with a smile. Leaning in even closer he said, "Fools will always be fools Sarah, so let him."

Devon’s body was beginning to shake. He was a fool and he knew the Duke was right.

“I do not want to be alone,” Sarah said to him softly. “I desire a large family to fill my home with love and laughter.”

“Perhaps until the right man comes along, you should consider taking a lover.” His voice was deep and sultry.

Sarah let out a small giggle and then turned to face him. The bubbles from the champagne were now in her head. She felt free and silly. She tilted her head up to him and smiled. "I do not know yet how to be someone's lover Duke Wellington."

“Would you like to be someone’s lover Sarah? Their mistress of passion and desire?" Slowly with every word he was leaning closer to her. "Do you want to be seduced Sarah?” He placed the tips of his fingers under Sarah's chin and tilted it up towards his lips. The Duke was close too close now.

“One inch closer to her and you are going off the side of the balcony Duke.” Devon’s voice was low with an intentional fierce tone. His body was visibly shaking. His breath was short and heavy with rage.

The Duke and Sarah turned their heads and saw Devon standing right next to them. Sarah jumped back and the Duke stepped back a few steps holding his hands up in front of him. He heard Devon’s tone more than his words and well understood, Devon was serious.

Sarah turned to him with her hand on her hip and said, “Why would you care how close he is to me?”

Devon ignored her and took Sarah in his arms throwing her over his shoulder. He began walking with her down the stairs, which caused a huge scene as Sarah was shouting for him to put her down.

Landon looked to Grams and said, “I saw this one coming.”

Grams giggled as she said, “It’s about time.”

Devon approached them with Sarah still over his shoulder. “I am taking the carriage and I will send it back for all of you.”

“I am going to stay with Lady Wilcox and Landon will see to it Brook makes it home safe, so that is not necessary my boy.”

Sarah shouted from behind Devon's back loud enough for the entire room to hear, “Someone tell him to put me down!” The music stopped and the room fell silent. Sarah let out a loud grunt in frustration and then screamed, “Dam it Devon!”
